Best Wine Destinations in the U.S.

You don’t have to take a trip abroad to enjoy delectable wines; there are locations all over the U.S. – from the West Coast to the East Coast to the South – where you can relish in wineries and vineyards, plus exquisite food, historic architecture, local culture, and more. Below, we share five of the country’s top wine destinations.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Did you know that Virginia is one of the country’s top wine-producing states? Charlottesville alone has more than 40 wineries! Be sure to taste the region’s prized Petit Verdot and Viognier along the Monticello Wine Trail, known as the Birthplace of American Wine, which offers lush views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Many wineries also offer lodging, making it a well-rounded experience.

Yamhill County, Oregon

In Yamhill County, about 45 minutes from Portland, you will find some of the country’s best Pinot Noir, thanks to the region’s temperature, geology, and rainfall. The soil is its biggest selling point: Marine sedimentary soils and underlying siltstone and sandstone contribute to higher tannins, balanced acids, and floral overtones of Oregon’s wine.

Napa Valley, California

Nothing says wine country like Napa Valley! The region is home to hundreds of wineries, ensuring you will go back, again and again, to keep exploring. There are many tour options, including some by train and gondola! Napa is also home to several Michelin-starred restaurants. Be sure to make reservations well in advance!

Finger Lakes, New York

Another picturesque destination for fine wine is New York’s Finger Lakes region, which is prime for making world-class Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The lakes provide a natural air temperature-regulating system, preventing extreme air temperature swings and providing a longer growing season. The Finger Lakes area has much more to explore than wineries, including Watkins Glen State Park. It is also home to some excellent breweries and distilleries.

Fredericksburg, Texas

With over 50 wineries, Fredericksburg is a lovely wine country destination in the heart of Texas Hill Country. Follow the Urban Wine Trail, which includes just over 10 downtown wineries and tasting rooms. One of the best times to visit is in October for the Food and Wine Fest, which features live music, specialty booths, cooking demonstrations, and much more.
