How to Stay Better Connected With Friends

Maintaining friendships is a lot of work (especially during a pandemic). Sometimes, friends will stray, but if you make an effort, you can keep in touch with friends and stay better connected for years to come. Here are a few tips to help you do just that!

Meet Virtually

If your friends live in different cities, getting together in person may not be possible. But, luckily, there’s Zoom! Why not schedule a virtual happy hour where your friends can get together and chat online. That way, you’re all still staying in touch and getting that face time.

Discuss It

Rather than letting things go unsaid, have a discussion with your friends about how you’re going to stay in touch. If you’re going too long between seeing each other, schedule events for the coming year and commit to them. Talking about how often you can meet up will hold you accountable and make you more likely to follow through on the plans.

Reach Out Often

Do you often think about reaching out to friends but then opt not to? Instead of putting it off, actively get in the habit of reaching out to friends when you’re thinking about them. For example, if you think of an inside joke or see something that reminds you of them, shoot a quick text over to let them know. You’re more likely to stay connected when you are in contact more often. So don’t wait – just reach out.

Plan a Vacation

If you’re having a hard time getting together with friends in person, a vacation together – even if just for a long weekend –could be the perfect incentive. Chat about what everyone is interested in doing and plan your time accordingly.

Become Pen Pals

Think about how exciting it is to receive a hand-written note in the mail! Sending letters, cards, postcards, or even care packages is a great way to stay in touch. It lets you know you’re thinking of one another and is something you can reciprocate for years to come.

Be Available When Needed

The hallmark of being a good friend is simply being there when they need you. So answer texts, calls, and emails. Show support. And let them know that you’ll be there for them through the good times and the bad.
