Everything You Need to Know About CoolSculpting

Struggling to lose small sections of stubborn body fat no matter how much you diet or exercise? CoolSculpting could be the answer. In this article, you’ll discover what CoolSculpting is, the different targeted areas you can treat, what to expect during the procedure, and side effects and other factors you need to consider.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved nonsurgical cooling technique that targets unwanted fat on your body. This treatment was specially created to help those struggling to lose fat that didn’t respond to lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. The procedure works by using cold temperatures to freeze and destroy fat cells. The concept originates from the idea of cryolipolysis, which is a process that creates a cell response by extracting energy from fat, causing the fat cells to die over time. This treatment is better if you have small areas of fat that bother you.

Areas CoolSculpting Targets

The most common areas for CoolSculpting include:

  • Upper and lower abdomen
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Love handles
  • Arms
  • Double chin
  • Back fat

What to Expect During CoolSculpting

The CoolSculpting process involves a trained healthcare provider using a handheld device that looks like the nozzle of a vacuum. Your practitioner will then apply a gel pad and applicator to the targeted area. You will experience a very cold suction sensation. For many, it can be a painful experience depending on the location of treatment and how much fat is in the area. After the area is frozen, your practitioner will then remove the suction piece and massage the treated area to help the body absorb the targeted fat cells. This can also be a painful process.

The entire procedure should last about an hour per spot, but it depends on the location.

Does It Really Work?

Although CoolSculpting studies suggest that the process typically destroys about 20%-25% of the fat cells in the area, it’s important to note that the results are not immediate – nor are they permanent. Results may show up anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. So, this treatment may not be for everyone. Also, this procedure is best timed when you will be wearing clothing over the area for at least 2 months because there may be some bruising.

Side Effects/Risks to CoolSculpting

As with any medical procedure, there are potential complications and side effects to consider before undergoing CoolSculpting, including:

During the procedure:

  • Sensations of intense cold
  • Tingling
  • Stinging
  • Cramping
  • Aching

After the procedure:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Aching
  • Cramping
  • Skin sensitivity

It Costs a Pretty Penny

CoolSculpting is not cheap. You should also expect to pay anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 per session. This depends on where you live, your practitioner, and the part of the body you are targeting.

Talk to Your Doctor

As always, we recommend speaking with your doctor before undergoing CoolSculpting or any type of medical procedure to ensure that it is a safe, viable option for your specific needs.
