Is It Time to Let Go of Your Security Blanket (or Teddy Bear)?

Do you still sleep with a security blanket or stuffed animal? If you’re embarrassed about it, don’t be! Experts say that it’s more normal than you may think. While most people grow out of needing their childhood comfort or “transitional” objects, it’s natural for adults to look to these sources for anxiety relief and comfort. So if a baby blanket or teddy bear is part of how you create a comfortable space for bedtime, we’re all for it!

However, some experts warn there are situations when having a security blanket or stuffed animal is no longer healthy. Let’s discuss.

It Messes With Your Relationships

There may be a problem if you look to your blanket or teddy bear for support instead of your partner. This could mean you’re actively choosing your comfort object over your partner, or your partner isn’t providing the comfort they should be.

It’s Holding You Back

Ask yourself if sleeping with a teddy bear or security blanket is isolating you from other people. If you avoid bringing people home like friends or partners or going on specific trips, it’s limiting your life experiences.

You Truly Can’t Sleep Without It

If you tell yourself that you can’t fall asleep without your security object, there’s a problem. If you can’t achieve a state of serenity necessary for sleep without the object, you’ve disrupted your self-regulation skills.

If you suspect your blanket or stuffed animal is causing problems, trying to get rid of it cold turkey most likely will not work. To be fair, you have slept with it for most of your life! It’s not a bad idea to work with a professional so you can get to the root of the problem.
