Y2K Singers and Their Best Looks

Not a day goes by where we don’t reminisce about the early 2000s. From the pink palette of Mean Girls to our subscription to Delia’s catalogs, fashion inspiration was endless. And, of course, the iconic pop stars of the time gave us incredible onstage looks. When they weren’t performing the hits, they were delivering an aesthetic that can only be described as an amalgamation of Y2K, girly, and bubblegum pop. We love Britney and Christina, but here are a few more of our favorite 2000s singers and their styles.

Mandy Moore

Who doesn’t remember Mandy Moore’s music video for “Candy,” when she was hanging out with friends in a lime-green Volkswagen Beetle. At only 15 years old, she had a fun, flirty style full of colorful tanks, halters, and tube tops paired with midi and maxi skirts. Willing to experiment, she remained playful with space buns, crimped hair, ice blue eyeshadow, and pink lip gloss.

Brandy

As the star of her own television show, Moesha, and a mentee of Whitney Houston, Brandy had a lot under her belt at a young age, including great style. Her red carpet looks were full of suits and matching sets in pink velvet, black houndstooth, and iridescent blue paired with her notable micro-braids.

Jessica Simpson

Next to other pop stars at the time, Simpson stood out for her girl-next-door image and modest looks. Her everyday style included graphic baby tees, detailed low-rise jeans, and the iconic Juicy Couture tracksuits in a variety of colors.

Play

You may remember the Swedish girl group Play for their rendition of “Cinderella” (also covered by The Cheetah Girls). Their traditional attire resembled the pages of a Limited Too catalog: crop tops, embellished jeans, gradient sunglasses, and sequins as far as the eyes could see.

Nelly Furtado

Canadian singer Nelly Furtado was all about versatility: Her genre-mixing albums always had us guessing what was next. Her onstage presence often mixed athletic wear with bright pops of color. Opting for comfort, she often wore cargo pants and dynamic tops with cutouts and customized elements.
