Ahh, the ’90s. In a word, the times and fashions are best described as eclectic. Tie-dye, fishnets, mini skirts, Doc Martens, acid stonewash, Aztec print, Chanel, you name it, it was happening. While we are still fully living for the ’90s revival we’re seeing, the question stands, what if bold prints and bright colors aren’t your thing? Well, you’ve stumbled upon the right article. Welcome to the world of ’90s minimalism. We’ll be your guide.

Minimalism is all about keeping it simple. So what if you also love the ’90s? We’ll show you how to get the look.

Inspiration: Cindy Crawford’s Pepsi ad, circa 1992

This classic cut-off denim short and white bodysuit outfit is timeless. Both of these separates are excellent pieces to have as a part of a capsule wardrobe. If you really want to amp up the ’90s vibes, pair this outfit with gold hoops and some Docs. If the weather is cooler, don’t think twice about opting for a long-sleeve bodysuit and the perfect pair of Levi’s jeans.

Inspiration: Sarah Michelle Gellar’s velvet moment

Velvet was everywhere in the ’90s, and while we’re not saying that you should go out and buy a velvet gown (though no one is stopping you), we ARE saying you should consider incorporating a velvet statement piece into your wardrobe. We suggest a velvet top with destructed denim and worn-in Birks for spring and summer, or a long-sleeved velvet dress and Doc Martens come fall.

Inspiration: Kate Moss’ slip dress

We don’t foresee slip dresses ever going out of style, but let’s give credit where credit is due—Kate Moss in the ’90s. Pair a simple slip dress with a t-shirt underneath or an oversized denim jacket on top, and keep rocking those Birks (or Docs!) for a perfectly minimal take on a ’90s staple.

Inspiration: Julia Roberts’ overalls

Overalls have made a comeback in a big way, and we’re here for it. Overalls are a super versatile piece that can be easily transitioned across seasons and paired with virtually any footwear. During spring and summer, throw on a pair of overalls with your favorite solid or striped tee underneath, and you’ll be the definition of effortlessly chic. If there’s a chill in the air, throw on an oversized cardigan, or layer your favorite sweater underneath for an extra cozy layer.

Inspiration: Sarah Jessica Parker’s tube top

Like so many pieces from the ’90s, the tube top never really went out of style, and we don’t anticipate that happening anytime soon. This is another versatile piece to add to your ’90s-inspired capsule wardrobe. During the spring and summer months, you can throw a tube top on with your favorite boyfriend jeans or cut-off shorts and Birks. Transition this piece into the cooler months by opting for high-waisted black denim and a camel blazer.
