Thinking About Buying an Electric Vehicle? Here’s What to Know.

For some, transitioning to an electric car can feel like a huge jump. But now that many automakers are introducing new, improved, and more affordable electric vehicles, purchasing an EV isn’t as challenging as it once was. However, there are even more things to consider. If you’re thinking about buying an electric vehicle, here’s what you need to know.

Where Will You Charge?

Like most EV drivers, you’ll likely charge at home or the office. Do you live in a location that allows for an EV charging station to be installed – or does your place of work provide charging stations for its employees? Are there normally spots open to charge your car if your work does have charging stations, or have plans to install more?

Are you a road trip lover? Enjoy going on a spur of the moment trip? Many new electric stations have popped up across the country – but do your research before heading out so you can plan your route and time spent at charging stations.

Price and Incentives

As with any car purchase, price should be at the top of your considerations. Today’s EV’s range anywhere from around $27,500 to $100,000+. That’s quite the range! However, that’s not the whole story. The price of most electric vehicles can be reduced by federal, state, utility, and local incentives. For example, the Federal Electric Car Tax Credit can return as much as $7,500. State incentives and tax credits vary greatly, depending on where you live. Unfortunately, in some states, driving electric vehicles can have added costs like higher registration costs.

Performance

Electric cars perform differently than their gas-powered counterparts. While EVs handle like traditional ones, they accelerate differently because of the electric motor. Gas-powered vehicles take a bit of time to build to maximum torque and power, while electric motors reach their peak power as soon as you press the accelerator. That gives electric cars vigorous performance: Some models can go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds or less.
