How to Set Up Your Own Meditation Room

Just like our physical bodies need a little TLC every now and then, our brains need some time to rest and unwind, too. Perhaps one of the best ways we can recharge and rejuvenate our mental state is through the practice of meditation. Though you don’t need a fancy space to get into your most relaxed state, having a meditation room or area at your disposal is a great idea for those who practice – or want to start practicing – regularly. Here are some tips for creating a space that works for you.

Sight

If your room isn’t calming and serene, your mind may have trouble falling into a meditative state. So the first step is to remove any unwanted clutter or distracting decor. Instead, hang motivational posters or even photos that make you feel good. This is also the perfect opportunity to put color therapy into action! You can paint the walls with calming colors like purple, blue, and green or incorporate furniture and pieces that match those shades.

Sound

When it comes to meditation, one of the biggest distractions to have is noise. If you live in a particularly hectic household, you might need to get creative to block out the sounds of your environment! Play a guided meditation in your noise cancelling headphones, listen to ambient noise, or hear a calming playlist over a speaker. Not only will this drown out outside noise, but it will add a layer of serenity to the room you can melt into.

Taste

You don’t need a consistent calming taste in the air (though if you can figure out how, please share!). But you can have some relaxing teas available so you can have a cup before or after your practice!

Touch

Having soft, fluffy things within reach can help your mental state. Even something as small as a stuffed animal can work wonders in lowering your stress levels and relieving anxiety. We recommend adding some meditation pillows – like these Florensi Meditation Cushions ($54.99, shop here) from Amazon. These cushions are designed to be placed right on the floor so you can be grounded in the softest seat possible.

Smell

You have a ton of choices when it comes to what you want your room to smell like – and an equally extensive amount of ways to disseminate those scents, from wax warmers to incense, candles, and room spray. Some of the most calming scents are lavender, rose, peppermint, and rosemary.
