In 1978, Australian surfer Brian Smith moved to California and saw an opportunity to create fur-lined boots. The shoes were originally designed for and popularized by surfers to keep their feet warm during winter. They quickly became popular for men and women of all ages worldwide. In the U.S., Uggs had their moment in 2004, when their popularity soared and retailers had trouble keeping them in stock. While the Ugg mega-craze quieted down a few years later, the boots remained a popular and practical footwear choice for winter. And now, in 2022, they are officially “back.”
