TikTok Made Us Do It: Fashion Edition

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that TikTok is a powerful platform that seems to know what we want before we do. The algorithm is a force to be reckoned with, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that our “For You” page is littered with fashion trends and aesthetics. Whether we were brave enough to rock them or not, we’ve put together a list of TikTok fashion trends we’ve been loving, even if from a distance.

Shackets

In early fall, we started seeing more of what we now know as the shacket, which is basically a combination of a laid-back flannel and a nicely structured jacket. They have been (and will continue to be) our go-to for cold days.

Blazers

Blazers are classic and powerful. You don’t wear a blazer to have a regular day – you wear a blazer to take on the world. Blazers were great transitional pieces in the fall and continue to keep us warm throughout the winter. The best part about blazers? Not only can you find them in any color or print you desire, but they can almost always be found on the cheap at thrift stores.

Cardigans

Have cardigans ever really gone out of style? We certainly don’t think so. This winter, we’ve been loving cardigans with little details such as accent sleeves or poms. Of course, we always have a few solid, chunky knit cardigans in various neutrals hanging in our closet.

Thrifting

We’ve seen a ton of thrifters on TikTok, which has inspired us to do some thrifting of our own. It’s great for our wallets – and Mother Earth. Plus, thrifting is fun because you get to be creative, and you know you’re getting unique pieces at a fraction of the cost of traditional retailers.

Tie-Dye

Along with all things ’90s, we saw tie-dye have a major moment in 2020, and it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. Tie-dye didn’t stop with just T-shirts; we saw tie-dye sweats, bleach-dyed band tees, even tie-dye shoes and hats. What we love most about tie-dye is how easy it is to do on your own!

Sweater Vests

When we started seeing sweater vests on TikTok, all we could think was yes – paired with a pleated miniskirt à la Cher Horowitz. We love them as much today as we did when we saw they were trending.

Retro Sneakers

We have come to realize, thanks to TikTok, that just about any outfit can be made more casual (and significantly trendier) just with the addition of a pair of retro sneakers. Whether you’re a multicolor New Balance kind of person or more of an old-school white Reebok fan, retro sneakers are a must-have for every season.

Cottagecore

How could we talk about TikTok fashion without bringing up cottagecore, a style that reflects a simple life of gardens, artisans, and little to no modern technology through delicate floral dresses, collared button-down tops, and denim overalls paired with oversized chunky knit cardigans.

Bucket Hats

Maybe it’s the romantic in us that loves the idea of bucket hats, a nostalgic accessory from our childhood, coming back into fashion. We don’t hate seeing a new generation wearing (and rocking, we might add) this Y2K staple.
