A huge majority of women dye their hair, either to change unwanted color or simply to have a different shade than the hair they were born with. But to keep that dye job looking great, you’ve got to get it done regularly to hide those ever-encroaching roots. And when you can’t get to the salon, you’ve got a real problem on your hands — actually, on your head. Here are some fast, easy ways to fix your roots until you can get to your next appointment.
Try Makeup
A little bit of eyeshadow can help you stretch time between visits to the salon. Eyeshadow is available in a rainbow of colors and hues, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find one that’s close to your hair color. Use a makeup brush to lightly apply the shadow directly to any visible roots along your part and hairline. Pay attention to your hairline if you sweat, because your shadow might begin to run. Avoid using mascara or anything gel or liquid-based, as this can make your hair look oily or dirty around the roots.
Spray It
There are many sprays on the market that boast root cover up. Sephora, Ulta, and Amazon are a few that sell them and they come in all shades. The problem we’ve found with sprays are that they either are too powdery or too grimy, and spray too much. Try a wand applicator instead, so you control the amount going onto your hairline.
Hide It
If you feel like your roots are just way too visible, cover them up completely. Pay homage to a classic hairstyle, and put on a headband or a scarf. Position it to sit at your hairline, and cover up those roots. This is a cute look in any era, and it’s a super simple fix for peekaboo roots.
Dry shampoo is a wonder worker when it comes to hiding roots. Our favorite is TRESemmé Basic Care Dry Shampoo.
You can also hide some telltale roots with a braid. Dry shampoo your hair, then lightly part your hair as you normally would and make soft loose braids on both sides of your hair line. Join the braids together under your hair at the back of your head. If any deeply discolored roots are visible, add some hair jewelry, like embellished bobby pins, or a flower or two.
Quick Root Fixes
It’s expensive and time-consuming to go to the salon, and you can’t always get there as soon as your roots start to show. You can use these few simple and quick fixes to cover up those roots in the meantime, however. Because after all, it’s about having the hair that you want…and getting there in a healthy way!
