’Tis the Season of Giving! No matter what winter holidays you celebrate, we encourage you to think beyond traditional gifting and look to helping those who are less fortunate. Here are some ideas for giving back this holiday season.
Host a Food Drive
Many holidays involve coming together with family around the dinner table. But there are millions of people out there who don’t have the privilege to attend an elaborate feast. That’s why donating to local food pantries, homeless shelters, or other organizations with residents to feed is important. You can also either host your own food drive or volunteer your time for these organizations. Every little bit helps!
Race for a Cause
From Turkey Trots to Jingle Bell Jogs, countless runs and walks are hosted around the country every year, many of which support local or national charities. You can also set up your own fundraiser via an app like Charity Miles, which allows you to have your friends, family, and co-workers help you raise money for the cause of your choice.
Volunteer at an Animal Shelter
Animals are just as much in need during the holidays as they are throughout the year, so consider volunteering at your local animal shelter. This is also the time of year that pets are given as gifts, which, unfortunately, can be just as quickly abandoned.
Gift Drives & Donations
Toys for Tots is a well-known, reputable organization, but you can also start your own drive. There may be a local women’s shelter or orphanage in need that you can reach out to help.
Start a Donation Jar
Starting a donation jar in your household ensures that you’re collecting funds for charities year-round (or even a few months). Any time you have extra change to spare, throw it in the jar. Keep collecting until the jar is full. Then, you can donate the money to the charity of your choice.
Donate Blood
Lastly, if you’re physically able to, it’s also a great time of year to donate blood. You can even host a drive in your neighborhood and get everyone involved. While it’s not the most glamorous of events, it makes a difference, as the need for blood certainly doesn’t decrease during the holidays.
