Five Ways to Stay Motivated

It’s Wednesday, and you’re dragging through the day. If you could just get this one task done, you’d be golden. But you can’t seem to work up the energy or the focus to get through it. We’ve all been there. Try these methods to keep yourself motivated.

Take a Much-Deserved Break

Chances are, if you’re feeling unmotivated, you’re experiencing some burnout – which probably means you’ve been working too hard! Reward that effort with a well-deserved and much-needed break. Even if it’s just 15-minutes, some time away from your to-do list will give you a chance to refresh your mind and reset it back into productivity mode. Need some ideas for a short break? Take a walk around the block; grab your yoga mat for some breathing exercises; or hop into your car and head to the local coffee shop, playing your current jams on the way.

Reward Yourself for Productivity

There are two ways to approach this: You can bribe yourself with something you’ve been wanting upon the completion (When I finish this task, I’m going to treat myself to…); or you can create miniature draw-backs for non-completion (I can’t do this until I finish this task…). The method you choose depends on your own style of motivation.

Publicize Your Goals

When you need to get something done, tell a friend. This way, social pressure kicks in, and there is someone else that can hold you accountable. Check in with the person and update them on your progress – whether they remember to ask or not! This can create motivation fueled by a desire for social approval.

Break Big Tasks Into Smaller Chunks

Overwhelming projects have the power to de-motivate because we get stuck in the “Where do I even start?” mindset. When this is the case, take a step back and formulate a plan. Break the project into milestones and set a deadline for each. As you complete phase one, phase two and beyond will seem more attainable.

Check It Off

As simple as it sounds, it’s always good for motivation to tick something off of your to-do list. So write down all your tasks, and make sure to savor that precious moment of crossing them out – success! As a bonus, this will help you stay organized through complex projects and processes.

If you’re struggling to stay motivated – with work, homework, housework, or something else entirely – try applying these tips for a boost in your can-do attitude! And don’t forget, it’s always okay to ask for help when you need it.
