Many of us have to deal with anxiety on a daily basis, and it can be frustrating. There is a list of things we can try, from meditation to exercise, but you might be surprised that certain foods naturally reduce anxiety when consumed regularly. Below, we’ve listed these foods and how they can help.
Yogurt
Yogurt isn’t just delicious and full of nutrients, but according to a 2015 study, fermented foods that contain probiotics (like yogurt) can reduce social anxiety in young adults. Other studies show that people who ate healthful bacteria reported feeling happier, had decreased tension, and experienced fewer ruminative thoughts.
Foods Rich in Potassium
If you’re a fan of beans, bananas, pumpkin seeds, or spinach, you’re in luck. Foods rich in potassium can help regulate and lower blood pressure. And when your blood pressure is lowered, so are your stress levels. Along with exercise, consuming foods high in potassium can help regulate your anxiety and stress.
Turmeric
Turmeric is a spice with an active ingredient called curcumin, which may help reduce anxiety by reducing inflammation in the body. Curcumin also reduces oxidative stress, an imbalance in the system associated with mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Turmeric is often found in Indian cuisine and is easy to find in stores. It can also be added to coffee, tea, and smoothies.
Salmon
Salmon is rich in omega-3s, which provide essential fatty acids that promote brain health. A 2014 study showed that men who consumed Atlantic salmon showed a noteworthy decrease in anxiety compared to those who didn’t. Salmon (specifically wild-caught salmon) is also rich in vitamin D. Research shows that a vitamin D deficiency is linked to anxiety and depression, and consuming vitamin D from food or supplements can lower negative emotions.
Green Tea
Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea that is known for its positive effects on the brain and its ability to reduce anxiety. In 2017, research showed that theanine improved tension, calmness, and relaxation. Adding green tea to your diet can also help you concentrate and feel more at ease, among other known benefits.
