For all of our friends out there who knit, we understand that choosing the right yarn for your next project is often the most challenging part of a project! Here are a few tips.
Patterns
It’s easier to choose your yarn when you already have your pattern selected since the pattern dictates what materials are needed. Be sure to find a pattern that fits your level of expertise (beginner vs. expert) and your time constraints (i.e., will the project take months or days).
Yarn Weights
The weight of the yarn required for your project will likely be listed on the pattern. But if you’re crafting from memory, pay attention to the desired result. For example, are you creating a lightweight baby blanket or a heavy comforter? We recommend going to your local craft store to feel the yarn in person. This will give you a much better sense of the weight you want to use.
Fibers
Everyone has different preferences when it comes to fabrics. As such, make sure you pay attention to the fiber. Do you want wool for warmth? Are you looking for something velvety and smooth, like cashmere? Fibers will also dictate the method of washing your project when it’s complete.
Colors
With seemingly endless yarn options available, choosing your color can feel overwhelming. However, not every color is available in every weight and fiber, which may narrow down your selection. Remember: There is no wrong color, so when all else fails, go with your gut!
Number of Skeins
How much yarn are you going to need for your project? Do you need two skeins or 10? This will typically dictate the cost of your project, so you may want to set a budget from the onset. If you have a tight budget, you’ll want to consider that when searching for your pattern.
