Forget Hot Girl Summer, It’s “Mamma Mia!” Summer

You’ve probably heard the phrase “hot girl summer” a few (thousand) times. To us, hot girl summer just means embracing your body and exuding confidence – and we’re all for it. But hear us out: We want this summer to be a Mamma Mia! summer.

In case you haven’t seen it, Mamma Mia! is a classic Broadway show turned 2008 film starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. The plot is simple: Sophie is about to be married on the beautiful Greek island on which she grew up, but before her big day, she wants to find out who her birth father is. So she invites three men who could potentially be her father and attempts to figure it out herself. We love this movie for its handsome men, beautiful beaches, and, of course, all of the best ABBA songs. But there’s another reason we love Mamma Mia!: the wardrobe! Here are some of our favorite outfits from the film and suggestions for how to achieve a Mamma Mia!-inspired beachy-boho look.

Meryl Streep’s character gives us big 1970s energy in the best possible way. To re-create her look but also make it your own, we love the idea of pairing light-wash overalls over a flowy white tank top and Keds. Top off your outfit with statement earrings and some funky vintage shades.

The year was 2008, and we hadn’t really seen Amanda Seyfried since she played her iconic role as Karen in Mean Girls. Mamma Mia! was a pleasant surprise because not only was her character lovable but, wow, the girl can sing! To re-create her look, pair some denim shorts with a delicately embroidered top, a woven pointed-toe mule slip-on, and some delicate gold jewelry so that the embroidery stays the focal point.

You simply can’t have a Mamma Mia! summer without a swimsuit that pays homage to Seyfried’s iconic “Lay All Your Love on Me” scene. It was pretty awesome to see someone on the big screen donning a one-piece before they became popular again. Pair a one-piece with some destructed denim shorts, summer slides, vintage sunnies, and an oversized straw hat.
