Powder vs. Cream Makeup

Typically, blush, contour, and bronzers are sold as hard-pressed or loose powders. But lately, cream and liquid formulas are becoming increasingly popular. So, how do you know which one is right for you? Here, we discuss what factors to consider when choosing between powder and cream makeup options.

Skin Type

When choosing your makeup, one important component to consider is your skin type. If you have dry skin, powder products can leave you looking flaky, aged, or dried-out. On the flip side, hydrating products can help your skin appear dewy and healthy. Powder products are better if you have oily skin, as they will help absorb any oil on the skin and give you a less shiny look.

Wear Time

Another factor to think about is how long you want to wear your makeup. Cream or liquid-based products typically do not stay on the skin as long as powder. Over time, they tend to crease around the eyes and mouth and sink into fine lines and pores, leaving your face looking textured. Powder has a longer wear time, especially when placed on top of primer or foundation.

Matte or Natural Finish

Powder makeup can result in a flawless matte finish if applied well. But use too much, and you may end up looking cakey, flat, or unnatural. On the other hand, cream or liquid products easily melt into the skin giving you a more natural, youthful look.

Blending

If you love to mix colors, cream or liquid makeup may not be the best option, as they are much harder to blend on the face and can look smudged or streaky if done incorrectly. Powders can be layered and mixed to create beautiful smoky eyes or ombré effects. Another thing to remember is that cream and liquid-based products cannot go on top of powder. So if you use powder and cream together, always apply powder last.

Ease of Use

For someone who doesn’t have much time to apply makeup, cream can be your saving grace. Cream products are easy to blend into the skin without a brush or sponge, while powders need to be applied with a brush, which can take longer and require some extra skill. Adding a few dabs of cream blush on the apples of your cheeks with your fingers can be an easy way to add some color to your face in seconds.

Final Thoughts

Makeup is a great way to express yourself. And with so many products, there is really no end to how many looks you can create. When it comes to using powder or cream, that’s entirely up to you. Try out some different products and see what works best for your skin!
