How to Say Goodbye to Your Overwhelming Wardrobe

Is your wardrobe overflowing into other areas of your home? Do you feel overwhelmed just by looking into your closet? Can you seemingly never find certain items of clothing when you need them? If so, it’s probably time for a major closet overhaul. Here are some tips to help ease the process.

Have a Plan for Unwanted Clothing

Saying goodbye to parts of your wardrobe is often challenging because the idea of tossing a piece of clothing into the trash is upsetting. Instead, come up with a plan for your unwanted clothes. You can donate them to a local charity, pass them down to a friend or relative, or sell them online.

Clear Your Space & Look at Clothes Individually

The first step to cleaning out your closet is, unfortunately, making a complete mess of it. So, take everything out and look at each item one at a time. Basically, you’re going full Marie Kondo on your wardrobe. Do you feel uncomfortable in that shirt? Donate. No longer a fan of that color? Donate.

If It Doesn’t Fit, It Doesn’t Stay

While the idea of keepeing a smaller-sized pair of jeans to motivate you to work out is great in theory, holding onto clothes that no longer fit is a strain on you mentally, emotionally, and physically. Your closet should be reserved for clothes you’re actually going to wear in the near future.

If You Haven’t Worn It, You Never Will

Whether gifted to you or purchased, an unworn garment is unworn for a reason, and that reason probably won’t change over time. As a general rule, if it’s been a full year and you haven’t worn an item of clothing, donate it.

Get Past the Sentimental Value

We often associate articles of clothing with memories, whether they’re concert T-shirts, high school and collegiate apparel, or even pieces you wore on a first date with a significant other. While holding onto some items feels important (like that prom dress you’re never going to wear again), they would likely get more use in someone else’s closet.

The Bottom Line

Saying goodbye to your clothes isn’t easy. Use these tips to help you get started, and let us know about your progress in the comments!
