The Pros and Cons of Relationship Breaks

There is no magical equation to making a relationship work. Sometimes, when things get bad, you need a break from the relationship to reevaluate things. The choice is ultimately up to you and your partner, but as for helping you weigh your options…that’s where we come in! Here are some pros and cons of relationship breaks.

Pros of a Relationship Break

You Get to Reevaluate Your Priorities

People tend to get caught up in their relationships. And while this isn’t necessarily a problem, you can sometimes lose yourself along the way and forget about the things you once cared about. When you take a break from a relationship, you have the opportunity to consider what’s really important outside of your significant other, which can be eye-opening.

You Have Time to Chill

Sometimes, things happen in a relationship and both partners need time to calm down – and a break allows them to do that. There’s no harm in cooling off before feelings are hurt.

Your Compatibility Will Be Tested

Sometimes a break is the best way to determine whether personalities, lifestyles, values, beliefs, and behaviors align. Time apart could help you learn or relearn these things about yourself to determine if you are truly compatible with another person.

A Break Is Not a Solution

Just because you’re on a break doesn’t mean the problems are gone. Whether you find out that you’re miserable without the other person or can live without them, it’s vital you when you do reconnect with your significant other, that you are both on the same page.

Dating Other People

When taking a relationship break, both partners must agree on whether they will see other people during this time. If you decide dating is acceptable, prepare yourself to potentially run into each other while out or see photos on social media.

Opens Your Eyes to a Weak Foundation

We debated whether this should be considered a pro or a con. Because while it might be positive to spot a weak foundation before taking the relationship further, realizing your relationship is not as strong as you thought can lead to feelings of doubt and loneliness.
