You are allowed to bring only one quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag of liquids in your carry-on through the airport security checkpoint. Containers in the bag must be limited in size to 3.4 ounces (that’s 100 milliliters) or smaller. How do you squeeze the most use out of the 3-1-1 bag?
Shop for smaller travel-sized versions of your toiletries. Many manufacturers offer flight-sized versions of favorite products.
Purchase inexpensive 3-oz. squeeze bottles and liquid containers. Slim and long containers may work better than fat and short. Fill them with small amounts of the shampoos, conditioners and lotions that came packaged in larger sizes.
What can you leave behind or put in checked luggage? Think of ways to save the 3-1-1 bag for essential liquids, gels and aerosols such as moisturizer, mouthwash, sanitizer and sunscreen.
Use a clean contact lens case to hold toothpaste or aloe.
Buy solid bars of shampoo and hair conditioner to pack in your checked luggage.
Bring along a package of makeup remover wipes so cleanser doesn’t have to go into the 3-1-1 bag.
Prioritize liquids to help you stay hydrated on the plane. These items could include moisturizer, hand lotion and hydrating nasal spray. Any leftover space can go to expensive makeup or perfume that you don’t want to lose if checked luggage goes astray.
You will have to take the 3-1-1 bag out at security checkpoint and put it on the conveyor belt separate from your luggage. Make sure you pack it conveniently at the top of your carry-on suitcase.
