Let’s Talk About the Term “Midsize”

You may have recently stumbled on the Instagram or TikTok hashtag or category known as “midsize,” where you’ll find fashionable women with “normal” bodies wearing “normal” sizes. But what exactly does it mean to be midsize? Here, we dive a little deeper into this trend and highlight some influencers leading the charge.

What Is Midsize?

In short, midsize means you don’t wear petite clothes, and you don’t wear a plus-size either. So, anyone that wears a size 8 to 14 could technically fall under the category of midsize. These are completely normal sizes! In fact, according to a new study published by the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education, the average American woman wears between a size 16 and 18.

Of course, it’s important to remember that U.S. sizing is all over the place, and we all carry our weight differently, which means clothes fit on our bodies differently. Over many decades, the fashion industry has led many of us to believe that anything larger than a size 2 is somehow undesirable. We are constantly inundated with models and other influencers that uphold unrealistic standards of how our bodies should look. Then what happens? We’re left feeling disappointed and even body shaming ourselves.

Fortunately, this #midsize moment has brought to light women with normal bodies wearing normal sizes and, most importantly, a ton of body positivity. Let’s take a look at some influencers that are not only ahead of the game but killing it as well.

First up, we have Abi Nunn, aka @midsizegal. Bold pants, a butterfly bandana top, and bright body-con dresses are among the many looks you’ll find on her Instagram. What we love most about Abi’s style is that she is serving us casual looks that are perfectly attainable for everyday life and your budget.

Next is Destiny Davis (@dessyraven4 on TikTok). We love Destiny’s content because she often pulls fashion inspiration from Pinterest, then adapts it to her size 12-14 body. And you know what? It always looks stunning.

Last up, we have Megan Carole (@megan.carole), who shares quite a few outfits, but her account focuses more on body positivity. And who couldn’t use a little extra bit of that sprinkled into their Insta feed?
