Even though New Year’s resolutions are a long-held tradition, many of us struggle with setting resolutions that actually stick. So before you set goals for 2022 that you can’t keep, consider these New Year’s resolution creation tips.
Pick a Resolution That’s Doable
While a resolution should be a big goal, it shouldn’t be so big you can’t reach it. For example, instead of making your resolution that you’d like to have six-pack of abs by the end of the year, simply set a goal that you’ll work on your abs “X” amount of times per week. You can still achieve the same end goal, but the resolution is more realistic.
Stick to One Goal
While having multiple New Year’s resolutions is admirable, it makes sticking to those resolutions all the more difficult. If you typically have a hard time making and keeping resolutions, setting just one will allow you to narrow your focus on achieving it throughout the year.
Quantify Your Goal When You Can
Adding a number to your goal is a great idea, but not if it comes at the cost of achieving it. For instance, if you say you’re going to work out three times a week, you have an achievable goal. But if you say you’re going to work out seven times a week, that resolution will likely fall through the cracks. Quantifying your goal changes it, so think about what works best for you and your resolution.
Outline Your Goal
Planning how you’re going to achieve your resolution is the best way to ensure you stick to it. For that reason, take the time to outline your goal and determine the steps you need to take to get there. What resources will you need? Is there anything else you should keep in mind before committing to your resolution? The more planning you do, the more likely you will be successful.
Think About Change
Lastly, think about the reason behind your goal. Sometimes, resolutions include removing something from your life, such as quitting smoking or reducing the amount of time you spend watching TV. Instead, focus on why you want to make the change, and what you can do instead of watching TV, such as enjoying breaks in nature or reading more. When you look at the positives of the resolution, you’re more likely to stay motivated to achieve it.
