How to Overcome Procrastination

We all procrastinate, though the extent to which we do so varies. If you can easily get yourself back on track, procrastination likely isn’t a hindrance in your everyday life. But if you continually encounter issues with procrastination, here are a few tips to help you overcome the problem.

Take It One Step at a Time

Sometimes we procrastinate because the task at hand feels overwhelming or daunting. Instead, focus on the smaller steps that lead up to the finished project and break things down into shorter sessions. This way, you only need to worry about working for a set amount of time. You can consistently cross small portions off your to-do list until the project is completed.

Keep Things Realistic

One procrastination pitfall is setting unrealistic goals or time lines. You know yourself best, which means you know what you’re capable of accomplishing in a given amount of time. Simply put: Don’t commit to finishing something in a day that you know will take much longer.

Don’t Allow Excuses to Creep In

Go into your project with a “no excuses” mindset. If you feel particularly tired one day, don’t let yourself off the hook. Push yourself to complete what you set out to accomplish. If you don’t, it becomes much easier for you to procrastinate.

Assign Someone to Hold You Accountable

The buddy system can be effective in keeping you on track with a project. For this reason, assign a friend, co-worker, family member, or significant other to hold you accountable. Have them check in on your progress. When you know someone else is keeping tabs on your ability to meet your goals, you’re more likely to meet them without excuses.

Remove Distractions

When you’re surrounded by distractions, the likelihood that you’ll procrastinate increases. So, turn off the TV, put your phone away, and focus on the task at hand. Make a coffee or matcha green tea first if you really want to get a good start with an energy boost.

The Bottom Line

If you continually have difficulty accomplishing things on your to-do list, it may be time to make some changes. These tips for overcoming procrastination are a great starting point.
