Hoop earrings are trending now, but then again, they never really go away. From spectacular gold hoops found at ancient Mesopotamian burial sites to the latest designs on New York and Milan catwalks, these earrings endure. Proof of fashion’s current love affair with hoops could be seen last fall as leading designers Sonia Rykiel, Derek Lam and Valentino highlighted the accessory in their 2019 spring collections. High-profile women ranging from Michelle Obama to Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B. are routinely seen wearing the accessory.
The earring’s simplest form is the pure circle, but fashionistas have never considered the geometric shape boring. From the 70s through the 90s, women favored thin, big hoop earrings in glinting metallics. Everywhere you look today, hoop earrings are available in an infinite variety of sizes and materials. Large hoops make a definite statement, while medium sizes rule for everyday wear. Teeny-tiny gold stunners are popular. Gold and silver are always in style, and designers have added sought-after marbled resin and Lucite versions to the mix.
Variations incorporate geometric angles within the circle, while embellishments include dangling gemstones, enameled roses, seed pearls and gold snakes.
The new crop has an edgy vibe.
From his studio in Athens, the designer Nikos Koulis experiments with the style by adding pearls and diamonds on hoops to create ornate versions. Others in the new crop of jewelry designers are putting their own innovative spins on the design. Sexy slender hoops have an edgy feel.
Designer Karma El Khal plays with sight angles for a frontal view that differs completely from a quarter view and then a side view. Venyx World designer Eugenie Niarchos designed the RA hoops that incorporate a sunbeam design around the hoop. One whimsical version was embellished with rainbow stones and another one in diamonds.
With a pedigree that dates back to the ancients, hoop earrings are part of Everywoman’s uniform. You can’t have too many hoops in your jewelry wardrobe. The playful hoops aren’t going anywhere for at least another 5,000 years.
