Five Tips to Make Long Flights Less Miserable

Long flights are boring and uncomfortable. Not only that, but dehydration, sleep deprivation, and stomach problems are common. If you have anxiety, the flight might be even worse. However, you can prepare for long flights to ensure they are a bit less miserable. Here are some tips!

Come Prepared

First, make sure your iPad, laptop, or phone is full of movies, TV shows, or e-books – and that they are fully charged. You never know what type of entertainment will be on board. You should also check to see if your airline has an entertainment app. While most airplanes offer Wi-fi, service can be unpredictable and slow. If you plan to work, be sure to download what you may need ahead of time.

Furthermore, make sure you have headphones and a neck pillow for optimal sleeping. An eye mask and earplugs will also make falling and staying asleep easier.

Test Sleep Aids Ahead of Time

If you plan to use a sleep aid on the plane, test it out at home first. You do not want to take a sleeping pill for the first time while on an airplane. You may end up incredibly groggy, you could have a bad reaction, or it may not work. It is not worth it at 30,000 feet.

Dress in Layers

Most airlines keep their planes cold and do not offer more than a small blanket, so it is best to dress in layers. That way, you will be comfortable no matter the plane’s temperature. Also, bring an extra pair of socks to wear on the plane to feel comfortable without getting your regular pair dirty. And, please: no bare feet!

Skip Alcohol

It may be fun to have some drinks on an international flight, but it can cause more problems than it’s worth, like needing to use the restroom more often and dehydration. This can cause discomfort, confusion, and a negative time once you land. You want to arrive fresh to your destination, not hungover! That said, be sure to drink a lot of water on the flight to maintain hydration.

Stretch Throughout the Flight

Although rare, there is a danger of getting deep vein thrombosis while flying. The best way to avoid this is to stretch every hour. Shrug your shoulders, reach your arms up and point your toes.
