TikTok is responsible for the careers of today’s most popular influencers and public figures. The latest creator to gain immense popularity on the platform is 29-year-old Emily Mariko. Why? Let’s investigate.
Mariko is no stranger to social media: She started vlogging on YouTube back in 2012. Over time, she earned a solid online following, which eventually carried over to TikTok, where she became known for her soothing, ASMR cooking videos featuring healthy, easy-to-whip-up recipes. But it was her leftover salmon and rice bowl from September 21 that catapulted her to TikTok stardom, taking her from 223,000 followers to a whopping 2.4 million practically overnight (she’s now up to 6 million).
It seems like everyone and their mother has tried this salmon recipe while others have parodied the dish’s success. Some people claim that her recipe is nothing special – but that’s perhaps the beauty of it!
The Salmon Recipe that Broke the Internet
First, you will need leftover rice and salmon. You then pull apart the salmon to achieve a shredded texture. Next, add your rice and salmon onto a plate and prepare to microwave it. Now, here is one of the reasons why this recipe blew up: Mariko placed an ice cube in the middle of her rice and salmon and covered it with a piece of parchment paper. Somehow, the ice doesn’t melt in the microwave!
After microwaving, you remove the parchment paper, then add avocado, sriracha, and kewpie mayo (another product that has sold out everywhere because of her viral video). Lastly, pair the mixture with nori, and you get a simple deconstructed version of sushi. Easy, right?
