The Return of the Going-Out Top

The “Going-Out Top” was in its prime in the 2010s, when a night out on the town was hallmarked by a trusty pair of jeans, heels, and the pièce de résistance: a shirt designated for special events. Be it bejeweled, cropped, flirty, or girly, the fashion-savvy likely had a collection of these going-out tops in their closets.

In recent years, throwing on a glitzy top for a night out was replaced by the rise of curating entire outfits. But now, the going-out top is making its way back into our lives! Here are five tops we think will be worthy of showing off!

Princess Polly Huntley Bodysuit ($50, shop here)

Class and temerity meet in the middle with this bodysuit from Princess Polly. All business in the front, the sweetheart neckline offers a casual look (especially when paired underneath a smart blazer), while the exposed back offers a bold juxtaposition come nighttime.

Cider Curve & Plus U-Neckline Lace Corset Top ($22, shop here)

The corset top is the fashion trend that reintroduced the going-out top to the world of Vogue, so we would be daft not to include it on our list of picks. We’re a fan of this one from Cider because it’s not lingerie-esque but instead “cute, edgy tavern wench” from the Tolkienverse.

Micas Mesh Tank Top ($18, shop here)

2023 is the unofficial official year of mesh! This top is a close dupe of the shirt Hailey Bieber wore when she and Kendall Jenner attended Harry Styles’ Love On Tour. There are worse ways to welcome this trend into your ensemble.

Princess Polly Becca Curve Long-Sleeve Crop Top ($44, shop here)

Edgy, daring, and surprisingly supportive, the Becca top is perfect for the curvy girl who doesn’t shy away from the crowd. It’ll be the statement piece of any outfit and can be worn with a pair of your favorite jeans and still turn some heads.

Windsor Gorgeous Glam Beaded Butterfly Top ($44.90, shop here)

Forget finding which color suits you. You know what will never let you down? Sparkles. This butterfly top is the perfect ode to the going-out top and is similar to the ones seen on style icons like Mariah Carey back in the day!
