Zero-Cost Self-Care Techniques

We’ve all heard the importance of treating yourself, but that type of self-care typically comes with a pretty hefty price tag. That said, there are still many ways to practice self-care without compromising your bank account. Here are some suggestions.

Get a Little Heated

It may seem a little out there, but snuggling up, in whichever manner you prefer, is a proven stress-relief tactic that can improve your mood and calm your system. For some, that means preparing a warm bubble bath to soak in; for others, it means curling up into a cozy blanket to binge-watch your favorite show; and for others, still, it means enjoying a midday hot chocolate. Whichever vessel you prefer, just make sure you give your body the warmth it craves.

Journal

While not everyone enjoys tapping into their emotions, journaling is a great self-care technique that doesn’t cost much. Simply grab a notebook and a pen (or your laptop) and start writing. Get your feelings off your chest, write yourself a funny story or a touching poem, or simply write down your observations. Whatever you feel like writing about is up to you, as the simple act of writing helps to reduce some of that stress you may not even know you’ve been holding onto.

Enjoy a Walk

If the weather is nice, going for a walk at a time most needed for you is a great way to unwind and touch base with nature. Some people prefer to start their day with a 30-minute walk, while others walk during their lunch break. Whatever your schedule accommodates will work, so long as you’re stepping away from your responsibilities for a little bit.

Do a Workout You Love

Exercise is almost always stress-relieving, but you’d probably be hard-pressed to call a workout you can’t stand “self-care.” If you dislike running, it may not provide you with that much-needed relief. Instead, start building activities that you actually enjoy (maybe it’s yoga or kickboxing) into your routine.

Completely Unplug

Taking care of yourself can sometimes mean stepping away from everything around you. And in the age of technology, sometimes the best way is to completely unplug. Whether once a day, once a week, or once a month, for whatever duration you like, completely unplug from the world and enjoy the serenity that comes without constant intrusion of technology. When you step outside to enjoy nature or lie down with a good book, you’re treating yourself while also positively impacting your body in other ways due to the lack of blue light.

A little self-care a day goes a long way, especially when it doesn’t cost anything. These techniques are a great way to get your self-care routine started, but don’t be afraid to customize them to suit your needs. The best part about self-care is that it’s truly all about you, so get a little selfish and treat yourself exactly the way you deserve.
