How To Make Your Eyes Pop While Wearing A Mask

For the past year, masks have covered the lower half of our faces when we’re in public. Luscious lips, creamy contours, and the perfect flush of blush pinks just haven’t been seen. All that’s really left to play with when it comes to our visible facial features are our eye areas. Thankfully, there’s a lot you can do to make your eyes the stars of the socially-distanced show.

Play with color.

Try out shadows that contrast with your natural eye color. They will make your eyes brighter and give them that “pop!”

  • Blue eyes: go for warm shades like copper and brown.
  • Green eyes: purple should be your go-to.
  • Brown eyes: greens bring out any gold tones.
  • Hazel eyes: golds will brighten your eyes.

Make your lashes stand out.

Playing up your eyelashes frames your face and makes your eyes look wider and more prominent. Use a volumizing mascara on your upper and lower lashes for the full effect—but be sure to choose something that doesn’t flake or smudge.

Look awake.

Spending hours late at night watching the news (or Netflix) does not make for a well-rested look.

If your eyes are red and dull from lack of sleep, opt for a nude or white eyeliner in the inner rim. A bit of brightness there cancels out redness and helps the eyes appear more awake. If you want to go the extra mile, use some eye drops for red eyes.

Shimmer shimmer shimmer.

Even if you’ve always been more of a matte eye shadow lover, adding a pop of shimmer will go a long way when your eyes are your only visible facial feature.

Place a subtle shimmer under the brow to highlight your arches, or use a bit of metallic shadow in the inner corners of your eyes (on your skin) to brighten your eyes. If you want to stick to your matte shadow, try tapping a bit of shimmer onto just the center of the eyelid to create more dimension.

Don’t forget the brows.

Eyebrows are a key part of your facial structure. Whether you have full, thick brows or thin, sparse brows, grooming and filling your brows will set the stage for what’s beneath—the eyes.

Using a powder or pencil, fill in any gaps and shape the brows. A powder is harder to mess up, but a pencil will help you get a more defined and structured shape.

Sealing your work with a brow gel or pomade helps hold the hairs in place throughout the day and will add thickness and texture to thinner brows.

Just because you can’t make a statement with a bright lip color doesn’t mean mask makeup has to be boring. Play up your eyes for an alluring and mysterious makeup look that enhances your natural beauty – mask and all.
