Early 2000s Puddle of Mudd gives us the “skater boy your mom did not want you dating” look. We’re talking baggy jeans, chains, oversized tees, and, of course, beanies. Oh, and how could we forget the retro sneakers? We like to think these guys paved the way for the indie and emo kids years later.

Usher was not only a chart-topper; he was quite the fashion icon. It was rare to see this man without some sort of hat, a heavy chain, and those bare abs (his best accessory, in our opinion).

Fat Joe was pretty classic with his look, often seen wearing a matching polo and hat ensemble with some ice around his neck. We love Ashanti’s light stonewashed hip-huggers and midriff tops – a 2000s girl’s dream outfit (if our parents allowed it, of course).

We have one burning question: Are you team bleached blonde or red manic panic dye? Linkin Park is another prime example of that early 2000s skateboarder/rocker look.

We’ll give you a second to sing this notorious chorus. Vanessa Carlton was an icon to many (as if she were an artsy older sister who would drive us around while we listened to obscure indie music). While her ’fits were pretty simple, they often featured colorful Dr. Martens, layers of interesting textures, and eclectic accent jewelry.

The Calling’s style reflected that same early-2000s rocker vibe we keep talking about, but a sweeter version. Again, this look gives us “prequel to indie and emo kids” vibes.

The fashion in this music video alone is something to talk about: fedoras, oversized carpenter jorts, low-rise hip-huggers, low-rise miniskirts, big watches, and, of course, chokers. Kelly Rowland’s chunky red highlights are also worth mentioning.

We think now is the perfect opportunity to talk about the Band-Aid Nelly can be seen wearing throughout his career. This actually started when he got a basketball injury on his face, but he continued to wear it in honor of Lavell Webb, who collaborated with Nelly for “Ride Wit Me” and had to serve a 10-year prison sentence. Have you ever started listening to a Nickelback song just to realize you know a lot more words than you thought? Same. We can’t think of a more early-2000s band, so it’s pretty perfect they were #1 on the charts in 2002. As for their style, just think French-tucked graphic tee into bootcut jeans.
