How to Plan a Self-Care Staycation

Have you ever felt like you needed a break from life? We can’t speak for everyone, but we definitely know the feeling. The good news? You don’t have to book an extravagant vacation halfway across the world to get away from it all. Intrigued? Allow us to teach you the ways of the self-care staycation.

What Is a Self-Care Staycation?

A self-care staycation is a vacation or holiday spent at your own home and adopting the idea of being a tourist in your own city. Instead of your typical work-day grind, you get to do, well, whatever you want. Staging local means no stress of traveling, next to no expenses, and naps. Lots of naps. The idea of your staycation serving as a self-care vacation means that you get to do things for yourself. Slow mornings, visits to the farmers market, yoga, long walks, reading, cooking delicious meals at home, you know, that kind of thing.

Rules of a Successful Self-Care Staycation

Basically, how not to fall into your old habits of checking in on work emails and doomscrolling.

Set the Date

Treat your self-care staycation like any other vacation and set a start and end date. Block this time period off on your calendar and make sure everyone knows that you will be unavailable at this time.

Do Your Research

Start looking into day trips or local events that are happening during your time off so that you can create your itinerary.

Determine Your Budget

Again, just like any other vacation, you’ll want to establish a budget. The pro here is that your staycation budget doesn’t have to be crazy, nor should you have to save for months on end just to ensure you’ll have a good time. Your budget may be geared toward a big grocery trip, attending local events, checking out museums, or maybe even taking a quick day trip.

How to Properly Self-Care Staycation

Well, first things first, there’s no wrong or right way to enjoy your self-care staycation, but we have some ideas if you need a little inspiration.

Play Catch-Up

Not just any old catch-up game though, we’re talking about catching up on those movies or shows you’ve been meaning to watch, books you’ve been meaning to read, games you’ve been wanting to play, or albums you’ve been dying to listen to. Snacks are also a must.

Enjoy a Maintenance Day

Whether it’s your nails, eyelashes, hair, facial, or any other regimen you often find yourself treating like a chore, take the time to really enjoy the process. If you’re a DIY queen and do these things at home for yourself, romanticize the process a little bit by doing these things with your comfort show playing in the background and a glass of wine, or if you prefer to go get all of these things done, put on your comfiest sweatpants and make sure to get an XL iced coffee on the way.

Refresh Your Space

For some of you, the idea of decluttering and refreshing your space may not be something your self-care staycation should include, but for others, this may need to happen on day one. If you’ve been feeling a little suffocated by the things around you, take part of a day to declutter, reorganize, and clean.

Get Out

You know all of that research you did on local events and attractions? Go scope them out!

Make Something

If you’ve been neglecting your artsy side recently, a self-care staycation is the perfect opportunity to sign up for that pottery class or hit up your local craft store for paint supplies. Whatever you like to do to get your creative juices flowing, make time for that.

Moving Your Body Is a Must

You don’t have to run a 5K, but make sure you get outside, get some fresh air, and get your body moving. If the weather isn’t cooperating, do some gentle yoga or deep stretching indoors.

Rotting Is Also a Must

We don’t recommend spending your entire self-care staycation rotting, but a few hours every now and again is totally acceptable and encouraged. Choose to sleep in, stay in bed, watch a movie, order take out, and doomscroll for a while (most of the day) before you wake up, move your body, and take a shower.

Make Times for Friends

Life is crazy and time tends to get away from us at an alarming rate, so if you feel as though you’ve not gotten time with the ones you love most recently, change that during your staycation. Make plans to meet for coffee or brunch with no work obligations limiting the time you get to spend together.

Make All the Things

If you’re like us, you probably have an entire Pinterest board of recipes that sound and look incredible, but you’ve put off making for one reason or another. Good news, your self-care staycation is the perfect time to try those recipes out and enjoy a number of homecooked meals made with fresh ingredients and love, of course. Just make sure to have your favorite takeout place on speed dial, because most of us have probably experienced a recipe that was only good in theory.
