Winter Sports for Beginners: A Guide to Getting Started

Winter can seem like a time when you can’t be as active or spend as much time outdoors, especially if you’ve never participated in winter sports. You may have never considered yourself a winter sports enthusiast, but what if you are? Here’s a guide to getting started.

Winter Hiking

If you’re unsure where to begin with winter sports, winter hiking is an excellent option because it’s relatively easy to learn and doesn’t require any specialized gear. Just be sure to dress warmly!

Skiing and Snowboarding

When thinking about winter sports, the first two that might come to mind are skiing and snowboarding. It is perfectly normal to feel intimidated by learning how to ski or snowboard, but many resorts around the country offer beginner lessons in both private and group settings. The best part is you don’t have to purchase equipment immediately; resorts often rent all the gear you need to get started.

Cross-Country Skiing

Another accessible winter sport for beginners is cross-country skiing. There are two types of cross-country skiing: classic and skate. Beginners typically start with the classic. To have a professional guide you, sign up for lessons through Nordic ski clubs, parks departments, or gear outfitters. For cross-country skiing, you will need skis, boots, poles, and warm clothes.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a terrific beginner’s winter exercise. It is a more approachable sport and is fairly inexpensive compared to skiing. All you need are snowshoes and winter clothes. Poles are optional.

Fat Biking

If you are comfortable on a bike and want to try a more adventurous sport, fat biking is an exciting option. However, this sport depends on quality gear, which can be expensive. Essential winter biking gear includes a fat bike, bike lights, reflective and warm clothing, bike maintenance tools, and transportation to the trails.
