Why Am I Always Hungry?

Do you always feel hungry? You’re not alone. While this could be a sign of a serious issue, it may just be your body trying to tell you something! Here are some reasons why you always feel hungry.

Not Getting Adequate Sleep

If you don’t give your body enough time to rest and recharge, your hormones can get out of whack. Unfortunately, some of those hormones control hunger, and the lack of sleep can cause you to have a bigger appetite, crave high-calorie, high-fat foods.

Not Eating Enough Protein

Consuming enough meats, cheeses, nuts, and other high-protein foods keeps hunger at bay by producing hormones that tell you you’re full. If your body isn’t getting enough protein, you’ll more likely feel like you want to continuously snack.

Not Drinking Enough Water

It’s easy to confuse hunger for thirst – so much so that our bodies often tell us to “eat” when all we need is water. The goal is to drink 64 ounces of water per day. Do whatever feels right for your body, but before you pick up that extra snack, try drinking a glass of H2O.

Eating Too Much Sugar

Sugars and carbs digest fast, causing blood sugar to spike and plummet. This drop in blood sugar causes you to feel hungry again. Instead of consuming snacks or meals high in sugar, look for balanced meals with protein and healthy fats to keep blood sugar stable and avoid that “hungry again” feeling.

Stress

Stress can be detrimental to our health in many ways, but it often causes unhealthy eating patterns, including overeating. Comfort foods, in particular, begin to trigger your brain’s reward system, and you begin to give in to emotional eating. Instead of eating your stress, look for healthier options like exercise or meditation.
