For years, we have been hearing about the benefits of collagen; that it rejuvenates skin and hair, cushions joints, and strengthens your bones and muscles. For this reason, many people take collagen supplements which are made of hydrolyzed collagen that the body can easily absorb and put to use. While it seems like there’s no downside to giving your body the extra protein it needs to build muscle, skin, hair, and even bone, like every supplement, there can be side effects. For the most part, collagen supplements are perfectly safe when used as directed. However, there are things you should look out for.
Bloating
A common occurrence with supplements, collagen supplements may cause bloating and stomach issues, including nausea, constipation, diarrhea, gas, or a heavy feeling in the stomach. For most people, these side effects pass quickly as the body digests the extra collagen. If collagen makes you feel blocked up, fiber and fluid may help you out. If you suffer from diarrhea, stick to bland foods for a while and take anti-diarrheal if possible.
Allergies
Supplements aren’t always safe for people with food allergies. Often, pill capsules contain some form of gluten – making them a hidden but common source of irritation for sufferers of celiac disease and other gluten intolerances. In addition, collagen supplements can be made from ingredients that may cause reactions, including shellfish and eggs. If you have an allergy, read all packaging carefully before consuming a collagen supplement – and see a doctor as soon as possible if you suspect your supplements are triggering mysterious rashes or other allergy symptoms.
It’s important to note that, like many other dietary supplements, collagen supplements are not required to be regulated by the FDA. This can lead to inconsistency in products and uncertainty around ingredients and their concentrations.
Beware of Mixing Supplements and Medications
Collagen supplements can also be harmful when combined with other supplements or medications. Collagen can impact the way your body absorbs medication (making it stronger or less effective). Before taking any new supplement, be sure to consult with your doctor who can give you valuable insight about whether your current medications could be impacted or what side effects might indicate an adverse reaction.
