The Art of Being Alone but Not Lonely

Some people live their best lives solo, while others find being alone extremely difficult and lonely. If you are in the latter group, you’ll be relieved to know there are ways to become more comfortable being alone. Here are some tips!

Being Alone Does Not Mean Being Lonely

First things first: It’s important to understand that being alone and feeling lonely are two different things that don’t have to go hand-in-hand. Being alone means finding peace and solitude with yourself; being lonely means certain emotional and social needs aren’t being met.

How to Be Alone but Not Lonely

No Comparing Allowed

It doesn’t matter how many friends you have or how often you enjoy a social outing; what matters is what works for you. Stop comparing yourself to others. The best social life is one that coincides with your wants and needs.

FOMO? Step Away From Your Phone

If scrolling Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok makes you feel like you’re missing out, take a break from social media. Remember that people only post what they want others to see, which doesn’t always reflect how they feel inside – or the whole picture.

Free Your Mind

When was the last time you did absolutely nothing? Set a timer for a few minutes each day to let your mind wander and see where it takes you. Enjoy the quiet, and never let it be discouraging.

Date Yourself

If taking yourself on a date sounds terrifying, grab a coffee to start. It’s a powerful tool for learning to be happy flying solo.

Do What You Want to Do

Have a list of things you haven’t done yet? Here’s your chance. Nobody can tell you “No”!

Look at the Pros

Every living situation has its pros and cons. For example, when you live alone, you can take up as much space as you want; you don’t have to wear pants; and you can leave dirty dishes in the sink.

Make Meals a Thing

For some, cooking for one may seem like a chore, but it can also be an opportunity to enjoy being alone. Take your time in the morning to enjoy your coffee and breakfast. And when it comes to dinner, pour yourself a glass of wine, put on your favorite music, and cook a delightful meal. Better yet, add in your favorite movie or show.

Keep Your Friends Close

Keeping your circle of family and friends close is a wonderful thing, so no matter how much you fall in love with being alone, you should continue to nurture those relationships – even if it’s just meeting for coffee or a quick text to check in now and then.
