You may be conscious of your inner voice, but, unfortunately, that voice often has nothing nice to say. We get it, but the problem is that when you tell yourself something enough times, you start to believe it. So, let’s change the narrative. Here’s how to master the art of positive self-talk.
Check In on YOU
This is especially important when you are having a bad day. Check in and ask yourself what you’re focusing on: Is it positive or negative? Consider what a friend would say to you to get you through the day, and tell that to yourself.
Find the Funny
Every day could use more laughter! Ensure you find something to laugh about every day. A good laugh makes a huge impact on the way you talk to yourself.
Make Positive Thinking (and Positive Talk) Routine
Listen to an uplifting podcast, read an inspiring book, or journal. These things can help you change how you think, react, and speak to yourself.
Take a Minute
Feel a negative thought coming on? Stop what you’re doing, process the situation, cool down, and put a positive spin on whatever you’re facing.
Sprinkle Positive Affirmations Around Like Confetti
Whether it’s a favorite quote or a simple reminder of how capable you are, place these affirmations where you’ll find them later – and maybe hide a few to find later. When you spot one of your affirmations, say it aloud to yourself.
Wise Words Only
Do you use a lot of negative phrases like “I can’t,” “I’m not good enough,” or “I never do anything right”? Well, stop that. Make the conscious decision to change what you’re saying or thinking. Instead, try positive phrases like “I can try my best,” “I’m worth it,” or “It’s okay to make mistakes and learn as I go.”
Surround Yourself With People Who Feel Like Sunshine
It’s no secret that the company you keep impacts how you feel about yourself, directly affecting how you talk to and view yourself. Hold tight to the people who make you feel good and always have something nice to say.
Don’t Fall for Negativity
Negative self-talk, that is. Whether blaming yourself, focusing on the negative, or always expecting the worst, be aware when you start this kind of thinking, identify what might have triggered it, and brainstorm how to counteract the negativity from here on out.
I use affirmations All the time, drives my kids crazy.
But it truly works.
