How to Find and Cultivate Friendships in Adulthood

Numerous factors contribute to why many adults have limited social circles. But it doesn’t matter who we are or where we are in our lives – most humans thrive on community, so it’s no wonder we naturally seek out friendships. In this post, we dive into the need for connection and how to make friends in adulthood.

Loneliness and the Need for Connection

Loneliness is a prevailing problem in adulthood. In fact, several government initiatives have been created to help combat what is called the “loneliness epidemic.” In the United States, the surgeon general released an Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community, which states stronger social ties lead to better community outcomes, while weaker connections lead to worse results.

Take a Class or Join Groups

Try joining classes or groups in something you find interesting or fun, like a book club, cooking class, hiking group, parent meetup, or dance class. Making friends here will be easier since you already have common interests, talents, or hobbies. This gives you an instant icebreaker and something to talk about.

Join Friendship Apps

Just like there are dating apps, there are friendship apps. If you’re shy and find it difficult to meet people in person, you can break the ice online. Some of the most popular friendship apps include Yubo, Bumble BFF, Hey! Vina, and Bloom.

Make Friendship a Priority

People often cite having no time as an excuse for not maintaining friendships. Life is busy, but most people do have the time; they just don’t prioritize it. True friendships, like romantic relationships, require effort to thrive.

Be Proactive in Communicating

It is easy to let friendships fall by the wayside. However, it is essential to remember that your friends are busy, too, and they may not always be able to initiate contact. Don’t be afraid to be the one to reach out, even when it seems like you’re the one making all the effort. Your friends will appreciate it, and it will strengthen your connection.
