Whether you work from home, go into an office, or are a stay-at-home parent, the afternoon slump can make it hard to get through the second half of your day. What do you do to survive when your energy feels depleted? Here are a few tricks!
Stretch
You may already be in the habit of stretching in the morning, but stretching midday can give you a boost, too. Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles and brain, which, in turn, gives you more energy. So get up from your desk and do a few stretches to get your blood flowing.
Have a Protein-Rich Snack
Snacks rich in protein will help you regulate your blood sugar levels and prevent energy slumps throughout the day. Some examples of protein-rich snacks include whole-grain crackers with cheese, hummus with veggies, Greek yogurt and more.
Take a Walk Outside
Going outside is a great way to refresh while getting some much-needed vitamin D. Even 10 minutes of sun exposure and fresh air can boost serotonin levels, improving your mood and overall energy. It can help you sleep better, too.
Get Your H2O
Low energy can be a sign of dehydration, so sipping water can give you a natural energy boost when that midday slump rolls around. Water with electrolytes can especially help you stay hydrated and reduce lethargy.
Chew Gum
A 2012 study in Nutritional Neuroscience showed that chewing gum can increase alertness and improve performance. A 2010 study showed that chewing gum also led to positive mood changes. Find an all-natural or sugar-free gum to keep in your pocket or purse for when you struggle to focus and need an extra pick-me-up to get you through your day.
Listen to Music
Music can enhance your concentration levels, mental efficiency, and creativity. Consider listening to playlists of smooth jazz, lo-fi, or classical music when you are struggling to fight midday fatigue.
