These days, fashion lovers are turning to the styles of Friends icons Rachel Green and Monica Gellar for inspiration in response to the resurgence of ’90s and ’00s trends. But with the nostalgic, more “whimisgothic” feel of the era making a steady comeback, who else to turn to than our favorite masseuse: Phoebe Buffay. Let’s break down some of our favorite Phoebe looks and how you can re-create them today!

Monochromatic looks don’t need to be boring! Pairing varying shades and textures of a singular color bring dimension and personality to a simple outfit. The focal point is the oversized denim shirt, which brings structure to the ensemble. Though traditionally boxy, Phoebe wears it unbuttoned with cuffed sleeves and messily tied in the front.

Phoebe was known for her eccentric, loud fashion sense – all too representative of her carefree personality. During one of the most pivotal moments of the series, she graced us with this fuzzy, orange coat. With a piece this striking, most would opt for more understated accessories, but that wouldn’t be very Buffay, would it? Instead of toning it down, Phoebe pairs her jacket with chunky jewelry and a leather handbag.

The One With the Black Maxi Dress

One of Phoebe’s outfits that embodied the 1990s was this black button-down maxi dress worn over a thin white turtleneck. Variations of this ensemble have made rounds in current fashion spheres, and it seems to be a reliable, timeless way to pay homage to the years of the Spice Girls and Tamagotchi. The defining characteristic is the addition of statement jewelry, which adds a whimsical air to the getup.

The One With the Printed Leggings

The original risk-taker, Phoebe pairs boldly printed leggings with a corduroy-textured knapsack in the same color scheme. Though her bottom half may be showy, she neutralizes the outfit by keeping her top and shoes black, making the outfit wearable by even the shyest fashionista’s standards. Despite the ostentatious pants, this is one of Phoebe’s most understated looks, but one we love nonetheless.

We rarely see Phoebe dress down in a pair of jeans, but when she does, boy, does she do it right. Instead of pairing her classic blue denim with a basic T-shirt, she layers a nude mock neck under an inspired printed tank. She finishes with a pair of chunky red shoes for a pop of color. This outfit particularly marks the transition from ’90s fashion to the more adventurous trends of the Y2K era. While we couldn’t track down a dupe for her skyline print vest, we think that any printed tank would work.
