Marie Kondo has officially made herself a household name. Marie is taking over the organization world from her best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up, to her highly streamed show on Netflix. Her catchy phrase “spark joy” has now become a part of her fan’s vocabulary. When asking yourself if something sparks joy, you have to question if something does just that: does it sparks joy for yourself? Does it bring you joy? Does it make you smile and feel good about yourself?
Keep these questions in mind as you endure the daunting task of cleaning out your more-than-likely overstuffed closet. When deciding what to keep and what to toss, ask yourself if that particular piece makes you happy. If it doesn’t, it’s time to donate it.
It is hard to let things go, even when you think you might like that item again someday (i.e., never). But, once your space is tidy and light, you will never look back. When you open your closet and see everything organized, you’ll have a more pleasant experience getting dressed in the morning and putting an outfit together for yourself. Getting dressed for the day should be fun, not overwhelming.
So, when you’re ready to do a little pre-spring cleaning, keep this in mind as you shuffle through your overflowing pile of jeans. Does each pair spark joy for you? Do they make you happy? Or are you keeping them because maybe someday you’ll wear them? Maybe you’re still holding onto a pair from high school that you’re hoping you’ll fit into again eventually. That doesn’t sound like something that would make you happy—time to donate them.
Take inventory of your closet. Go through and pull out each piece. Look it over for any holes or signs of over wear. If it looks good and you’re questioning whether or not to toss or keep it, decide whether it sparks joy or not. Once you do this, you’ll have a closet full of clothes and shoes you truly like. No one likes that feeling of having nothing to wear. Find what makes you happy, and do a little shopping in your own closet before adding more to it.
