Everybody’s Talking About Hair and Makeup from the Emmys

The 2019 Emmy Awards kicked off the start of the fall TV season and gave fans glimpses of hot makeup and hair trends they’ll see during the remainder of awards season. Hair—big, glorious bombshell hair—was the important look for stars such as Zendaya and Mandy Moore, while Emilia Clarke shocked by channeling Rapunzel with waist-length hair. Bold glamourous makeup made room for subtle monochromatic nudes on the red carpet and glittering underliner remained strong. Keep reading to find out why everybody’s talking about hair and makeup at the Emmys.

Big beautiful hair

Rich, luxurious locks styled into big hair made for Old Hollywood bombshell glamour. Supermodels of the 1990s such as Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer inspired the voluminous curls of nominee Mandy Moore, whose ethereal, natural-looking makeup cast a golden glow. Euphoria star and presenter Zendaya showed off a new shade of auburn hair coaxed into glossy, soft waves for an ultimate starlet touch. The red hair color was a perfect complement to her jewel-tone green dress and diamonds. Veronica Lake was the minimal and modern muse for nominee Christina Applegate.

All-Over Nude Makeup

Soft nudes kept pace with the flat-out glam makeup stylings. Soft pinks for nominee Sophie Turner included pink champagne tones in her eyeshadow and lips that played up the color of her gown. Michelle Williams complemented her colorful Louis Vuitton outfit with soft pinks on eyes, cheeks, and lips. Julia Garner perfected her monochromatic look with amber shades on lids and lips.

Long, long hair and sleek center parts

Waist-grazing extensions pushed boundaries for Game of Thrones nominee Emilia Clarke. Her glam look of center-parted, Rapunzel-length hair and glowy makeup went well with her JLo-inspired swipe of brown lipstick and gown with plunging neckline. Sleek, straight locks were also seen on Emanuela Postacchini of Who Is America? and on Pose star Mj Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who was attending her first Emmys awards went for glam in a berry lipstick that echoed the shade of her dress.

Dramatic Lips and Eyes

Jameela Jamil impressively did her own makeup and came up with a poppy orange-red lip for the perfect color combination with her pastel teal gown. Viola Davis looked every inch her role as the new global L’Oréal Paris spokeswoman pairing smoky eyes with a dark berry lip. Bold red lipstick looked stunning on Naomi Watts and Gwendoline Christie. Watts teamed the classic lip with a deep side-parted, blonde bob and Christie with her new longer hair styled in slick ‘80s-inspired waves.

Tangerine lipstick was the perfect choice to accent Brittany Snow’s Strawberry blonde hair and light blue gown. Niecy Nash wowed with a multi-dimensional eye look made from four shades of shadow that matched her sparkly headpiece and sequined pink dress.

Revved up ponytails

The addition of hairpieces gave extra oomph to a high ponytail that not only kept Kerry Washington cool on a hot night but also added (along with retro curtain bangs) an extra edgy, sexy and modern vibe. Glossy pale pink lips and ’60s-inspired graphic eyeliner completed the look. Others who amplified ponytails were nominee Rachel Brosnahan, and Amy Adams, whose pony was coiled lengths secured with a ribbon.

Glittery Eyeliner

Regina King sported an eye-opening gold underliner, and Indya Moore added an ethereal touch with her angelic gold glittery underliner. A pale blue smoky eye and blue metallic liner matched Rachel Brosnahan’s makeup to a blue sequin gown.

Gorgeous Curls

A sharp side-parted bob accented Taraji P. Henson’s full force curls, while Sandra Oh piled on curls in a playful, pulled-back updo. Angela Bassett’s gorgeous curls were pulled into a half-back, voluminous updo, and Anna Chlumsky set off her bouncy curls with a pretty pink lip.
