Holidays, birthday parties, family dinners…whatever gathering you are hosting can go from fun to stressful in no time. But luckily, we’re here to reverse that! Here are eight ways to keep big gatherings as stress-free as possible.
To the List, to the List
The best way to stay organized is by creating a list or lists. Some people can use a single to-do list, while others may need an entire notebook divided into party planning sections. The goal is to keep everything you need to do, plan, or purchase written down so you don’t forget it along the way.
Check the Guest List Twice
Oftentimes, we end up inviting too many people to a function because we don’t want to offend anyone in the process. A surefire way to reduce stress at a big gathering is to trim the guest list.
Always Be Prepping
Decorations can go up 1-2 days before the event, and many sauces, soups, dressings, and desserts can be made ahead of time as well. The goal is to be working on last-minute touches as guests arrive, not running around with a million things to do.
Potlucks Are Always a Good Idea
Potlucks are always a good idea to ensure everyone has something they like to eat. (When in doubt, stick with what you brought!) Create a group text or shareable document that all guests can access to see who is bringing what. This way, you don’t end up with 14 desserts.
Plastic But Make It Fashion
There are plenty of options for disposable plates, cups, and flatware that look like the real deal, and they mean next to no cleanup for anyone.
Accept the Help
Inevitably, people will offer to help. And while it can be hard, accept the help. Ask someone to show up an hour before the party starts so you have extra hands, or put someone on “ice duty” so you don’t have to think about it.
Have Sips and Snacks Ready
As long as you have a few snacks and drinks for guests, they won’t grow tired waiting for the main course.
Stick to What You Know
A large gathering isn’t the time to try out new, involved recipes with exotic ingredients. Stick to recipes you know are foolproof.
