Warm weather is here, and we are excited to return to backyard barbecues, pool parties, picnics, cookouts, and more. But how do we get the good times rolling? By breaking out a few classic – and a few unique – yard games. The whole family is bound to have fun, especially if you choose some of these fantastic options.
Capture the Flag
If you have a medium-to-large group, capture the flag will keep the crew entertained. Divide into two teams, then work to locate and steal the opposing team’s flags. If you get tagged, you’re sent straight to “jail” until someone from your team frees you. Make your moves wisely to avoid getting locked up.
Croquet
Croquet is returning in popularity, and there’s no sweeter victory than hitting your best shot through a wicket at the end of a game. Croquet sets are easy to transport and store, so you can bring this yard game to every event this summer.
Kan Jam

Bring on the disk-throwing game of Kan Jam! Grab four people and set up the two flexible plastic cans. Give yourself some practice shots because the more you whip the frisbee, the sharper your focus and aim will be. The goal is to get the disk through the slot, but if you’re a newbie, try just hitting the can – or have your partner help you hit the can by swatting the disk.
Bocce
Bocce is a fun game for all ages! Ensure you have a flat, grassy space and a good set of bocce balls. Roll the small white ball to a place in the yard, then try to get your remaining balls as close to it as possible. You can also try to hit your opponents’ balls away from the white ball to gain an advantage.
Spikeball
Spikeball is like volleyball but without the hassle of setting up a large net. Because of its size, you can take this portable game to the park, beach, or any backyard event. To start, four players are split into two teams. You’ll begin by bouncing the ball off the net, and the rest of the rules are like traditional volleyball. You get three passes on each side, and then you have to make a play at the opposing team. If they miss, you get the point. If they don’t, the game keeps going until someone misses.
