Hot Winter Drinks to Drink Besides Coffee and Tea

Coffee, tea, (and hot chocolate!) are the go-to beverages to keep you warm during winter, but there are so many more options to choose from! Keep reading for some creative ideas!

Hot Almond N Cream Drink

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping on your nose…and a delicious, rich almond drink in your hand. If you want to warm up quickly, this delightful recipe from Taste of Home will do the job.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 2 tsp almond extract
  • Ground nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, cook and stir butter and sugars for 12-15 minutes or until butter is melted.
  2. Pour into a large bowl. Add ice cream and extract. Beat on medium speed for 1-2 minutes or until smooth, scraping the bowl often.
  3. For one drink, spoon ¼ cup of mixture into a mug with ¾ cup of boiling water. Stir well, sprinkle with nutmeg, and enjoy.

Spiced Hot Toddy

A classic hot toddy is great for the mind, body, and soul. But what if we told you there’s another hot toddy recipe that’s “spiced?” Check out this recipe from Real Simple below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp cardamom pods, cracked
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 3 cups water
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 1 cup bourbon
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Toast cardamom pods and star anise in a saucepan over medium-low heat, undisturbed, until fragrant, 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add water and honey; bring to a simmer over medium.
  3. Simmer, covered, 10-12 minutes.
  4. Stir in bourbon and lemon juice.
  5. Keep warm over low heat until you’re ready to serve. Garnish with star anise.

Golden Latte

If your body’s been achy, you feel a cold coming on, or you have unwanted inflammation, this golden latte recipe from Everyday Health may help you along. Why? Turmeric is one of its main ingredients, which has long been used for pain relief.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1½ tsp pure maple syrup
  • ¾ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 star anise for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together all the ingredients. Bring to a simmer and serve hot.
  2. Use a milk frother to froth the latte just before enjoying. Garnish with a star anise, if desired.

Cowboy Coffee

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz hot dark-roast coffee
  • 1 shot espresso
  • ½ oz sarsaparilla syrup
  • Steamed milk
  • Pinch of ground espresso
  • Pinch of smoked sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Combine dark-roast coffee and espresso in a mug.
  2. Add sarsaparilla syrup and stir to combine.
  3. Top with steamed milk.
  4. Sprinkle with ground espresso and a pinch of smoked sea salt.

Eggnog

Eggnog doesn’t have to be just a Christmastime staple. This homemade recipe from Real Simple should keep you in the holiday spirit long after the season ends.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¾ cup brandy

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring heavy cream, sugar, and nutmeg to a simmer.
  2. Blend eggs in a blender on low for 1 minute.
  3. Gradually add hot cream mixture.
  4. Blend until frothy, about 30 seconds.
  5. Add brandy and blend until well combined. Serve warm.
