Artichoke Gruyère Dip
(image via the spruce eats/eric kleinberg)
Take a classic dip recipe and make it more gourmet by swapping out cheeses. Take this dip from The Spruce Eats, for example. Swap out Parmesan for creamy, rich Gruyère. The change is subtle but makes all the difference.
Ingredients:
- 14 oz artichoke hearts packed in water, drained
- ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
- 1 Tbsp mayonnaise
- Dash cayenne pepper
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese, divided
- 1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh basil or parsley (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400° F.
- Pulse artichoke hearts in a food processor to break them into small pieces, about 20 seconds.
- Add yogurt/sour cream, mayonnaise, cayenne pepper, and ¾ cup Gruyère cheese. Pulse a few seconds until just blended.
- Scrape and spread into a baking dish and bake 20 minutes, uncovered, until warmed through and slightly bubbly.
- Sprinkle remaining ¼ cup grated cheese and fresh herbs (if using) on top and broil for 1-2 minutes.
- Serve warm or at room temperature with slices of crusty bread. Try rubbing the bread with olive oil and toasting it in the oven before serving.
Caramelized Onion Dip

Regular onion dip is fine, but this smooth mixture of cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, and Worcestershire sauce is topped off with caramelized onions to create magic. Check out this recipe from Southern Living.
Ingredients:
- 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
- 3 yellow onions, sliced
- 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp kosher salt
Instructions:
- Place oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and translucent, about 7 minutes. Continue cooking over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the translucent onions become brown, 10-15 minutes. (Note: The onions should not be crispy or have dark brown spots from contact with the pan; they should be soft, semi-translucent, and brown.)
- With a mixer, beat cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise on medium-high until smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce and salt and stir to combine. Add caramelized onion and incorporate with a spatula until evenly distributed.
