Prom Trends From the 2000s That Had Us Thinking We Were All That

We have ’90s and ’00s rom-coms to blame for a lot of our sky-high expectations for prom. We thought we would find the perfect dress, our date would come to pick us up, we would walk down the stairs in slow motion, leaving everyone breathless, and we would have the time of our lives. In reality, it was far from that magical. Either way, let’s look at some of the prom trends of the 2000s that we’re so glad are in the past.

Spaghetti Straps

We don’t know about you, but when we think of prom trends, we immediately think of spaghetti-strap dresses. This trend was a little bit of ’90s leftover. And while a skinny strap didn’t offer a ton of support, at least you knew you wouldn’t have any unforeseen slips when it came to your top half.

Spray Tans

In the 2000s, spray tans were super-convenient because you could get them the day before your special event and, in a few minutes, look like you just got back from the tropics. Well, kinda. You definitely left a little bit of orange wherever you went. The spray tans of yesteryear have us thankful for the self-tanner of today.

Silk

If we could define 2000s prom trends with just one textile, it would be super-shiny silk paired with frosty makeup and roll-on body glitter. We were luminescent, to say the least.

Crunchy Spiral Curls

Looking back at old prom photos, we want to run our fingers or brush through those crunchy spiral curls. Sure, we wore our best glitter hair clips that night, but you couldn’t even see them with all the spirals.

Matching Shawls

Watch any ’90s or ’00s rom-com, and you’ll notice the matching dress and shawl combo. Yes, the shawl had to match the dress perfectly.
