There are two kinds of people in the world: those who have already started their annual Gilmore Girls rewatch and those who have not. We don’t necessarily consider Rory, the sweet yet socially awkward prep school girlie, a fashion icon, but we respect her for paving the way for us dark academia girlies. Here are five Rory Gilmore-inspired ’fits we’ll be wearing all autumn long.
What Was the Aesthetic?
When Gilmore Girls first premiered, we were right on the cusp of Y2K fashion while still clinging to the fashion of the late 1990s, like low-rise jeans, tees over long-sleeve shirts, and some interesting color combinations. As fashion changes and Rory matures, we see more early-2000s business casual looks that can easily go from day to night.
The Sweater

Remember how we said in early episodes that the fashion is ’90s to its core? Exhibit A is this sweater – and we can’t get enough of it. We would reimagine this sweater look today with light-wash jeans and Birkenstock Boston clogs.

Y2K fashionistas loved the color brown, but we think the signature accent hue can be left in the past. But an oversized hoodie paired with loose-fitting jeans and white sneakers is totally something we can support.

Here, we see a prime example of a more mature Rory. We would swap the mini for a midi, French-tuck the sweater, and opt for slip-ons or loafers for a dark academia-inspired look.

Cargo A-Go-Go?

We are smitten with this look. To make it more modern, we’d ditch the blazer and opt for a plain white tee or crop top with a midi-length skirt to create a longer and more weather-appropriate silhouette.

Okay, we said we would be copying these outfits all autumn long, and we will, but we can’t NOT talk about this red velvet number. If you have any gatherings this holiday season, secure a red velvet number now. To keep things casual, throw on an oversized denim jacket. To add texture to your outfit, lace tights are always a great idea.
