When the seasons change, it’s normal to want to switch out your wardrobe! But, many of us just don’t have the extra change to do so (or the heart to hurt the environment). Luckily, thrift stores are alive and well, and you can score some seriously cool pieces for pennies. (And, if you don’t believe us, check out ThriftTok on TikTok!) So whether you’re new to the thrift game or your weekends consist of digging through racks of secondhand treasures, here is our list of pieces you should be thrifting this fall and winter.

Oversized Sweaters
Do not sleep on sweaters from thrift stores, which are notorious for having some great old-man sweaters in both neutrals and bold retro prints. You can’t go wrong with an oversized sweater French-tucked into vintage denim and paired with Doc Martens.
Sweater Vests
Sweater vests are coming back this fall in a big way. And while you could drop a wad of cash on a new one, you could also shop local or help out a nonprofit by snagging one at a thrift store. Frankly, we can’t think of a cooler look than a vintage sweater vest paired with a front-button miniskirt and over-the-knee boots.

Vintage Denim
We’ll be the first to admit that jean shopping can be frustrating at times; however, if you’re willing to try on several pairs, it’s worth all the sweat and tears once you find that perfect pair. Of course, skinny jeans were IT for a long time, but now, high-waisted mom jeans are reigning supreme. Thrift stores are a great place to snag a few pairs of denim (especially if you’re a little skeptical about styling certain trends) because they’re less expensive than retail. If you find they aren’t your thing, you can always donate them back.
Skirts
Our personal favorite thrift store finds for fall and winter are printed maxi skirts that button all the way down the front. Pair them with oversized sweaters and Docs or even slip-ons, then thank us later.
Vintage Coats
Another vintage piece? The answer to that is “yes,” because vintage typically means unique, and we’re all about that – especially when it comes to outerwear. Most vintage coats are pretty high quality, plus they have the added benefit of coming in funky colors and prints. They may require a trip to the dry cleaners, but, hey, it’s a small price to pay for a coat that shouldn’t cost more than a few bucks.

Trousers
We love the dark academia trend this fall and winter, which is why we suggest thrifting some high-waisted trousers. This is another garment that will require some patience in the fitting room because sizing can be a bit of a chore. But much like their denim counterparts, trousers are so worth it when you find a pair that fits.

Blazers
We aren’t done obsessing over dark academia just yet. You can snag blazers in just about any color and in a ton of different patterns. Plus, blazers are super-warm and don’t add a ton of bulk to an outfit. And if we can give you one piece of thrifting advice to live by: Check out the men’s section.
Retro Sweatshirts
Old-school sweatshirts are some of our favorite pieces from thrift stores because it feels like you scored treasure when you find the perfect one. It doesn’t matter whether you choose to sleep in it or make it a whole outfit; you’re bound to be warm and cozy – and look trendy as heck.
Thank u for those great ideas. Haven’t been into a thrift shop for awhile but I have found some neat items there.
