We’ve seen trends cycle through recent years. There’s an abundance of style inspiration with the Y2K revival, ‘90s styles, and even 1970s boho influence. But what if we went back even further? That’s right; we’re jumping back to the 19th century for this latest trend: bloomers. Here’s a little history and fashion advice on the age-old garment.
Bloomers were introduced during the era of Victorian Dress Reform, a Western movement toward practical and comfortable daily attire. The trouser-like garments traditionally worn under skirts were tapered at the knee or ankle. They were spearheaded by Amelia Bloomer and women’s rights activists and signified a time of freedom and self-expression in male-dominated spheres.
As fashion evolved, the masses couldn’t deny the garment’s value. The range of fabric options, accompanied by frills, bows, buttons, or lace detailing, offered style and variety. Bloomers were also versatile: Both women and girls found bloomers to be suitable athleisure attire well into the 20th century.
Today, bloomers are trending once again, providing a vintage pop to any outfit. Here are a few ways to style them:
