A monochromatic outfit consists of multiple pieces in one color or tone. They can be made up of shades of one color and accented by a statement accessory of another color. You’ve probably worn a monochrome outfit many times before without realizing it. All black? That’s monochrome. White-on-white is monochrome, too. And don’t forget jeans with a blue top or denim-on-denim!
Here are some tips to help you perfect the monochrome look.
Start With the All-Black Look
If you’re new to the monochromatic trend, we recommend starting with a blacked-out look to get a feel for it. Chances are, you can pull multiple black layers out of your closet right now.
Not sure how to accessorize an all-black look? Try pairing it with some red heels or white patent booties to make a statement. Or keep your shoes dark, and let your lips do all the talking with a bold red shade.
Branch Out to Other Colors
Once you’re comfortable with all black, try a safe neutral such as white, cream, tan, or camel. Then, branch out to any of your favorite colors. Feeling too blue or red in your new look? There’s a reason for that. Tones are crucial. You don’t want every piece to blend together. Instead, opt for different shades of the same color group, paying attention to the undertones of each shade.
Texture will help you out, too. When your entire outfit is one color, it can feel, well, blah. By using textures like fur, denim, knits, or sequins, you can add depth and keep your outfits interesting.
What If I Don’t Have the Right Colored Accessories?
We don’t all have a closet full of rainbow shoes on deck – though we wish we did! When you need to finish off the look, but you can’t find a purse or shoe in the right shade, focus on texture or pattern. If you want to be bold, try a pattern like snakeskin. If you want to tone it down a little, make your accessories neutral.
These tips will help you pull off the much sought-after monochrome outfit. Stick with your comfort zone to start, but don’t be afraid to branch out into even the brightest color families once you have the hang of it.
